One of the great features of Canon Rebel T1i aka EOS 500D is it’s high-definition video recording in this DSLR camera.
If you have a fast lens like a EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens
500D automatically adjusts the aperture down to something like f/16 in bright light since it is full auto.
I just came across a tip that lets you set a manual Aperture for shooting video. The technique involves twisting off your lens from the mount a bit and I am not sure if that is a safe thing to do.
Disclaimer: I am sharing this more for an educational purpose than a recommended way. So, be forewarned if this somehow becomes detrimental to your camera.
How to Set Manual Aperture in Video?
- Set your desired Aperture in Av setting
- Twist the lens slightly disconnecting it from the camera
- Switch to Video mode and start shooting (since the lens is disconnected, the camera can change the aperture)
This trick disables manual and auto focus as well since your lens is disconnected. Read this forum thread if you would like full manual control of ISO, shutter speed, etc.
Alternate method
User GioSer in the Vimeo video linked suggests an alternate way of achieving this.
We could get an old manual lens like an Helios f2.0 and a M42 Canon EOS Adapter
I believe this is a much desired method than the lens twist off which I am not sure if it could harm the camera.
